6 Netzkünstler verschiedener Nationen und Muttersprachen werden in der Performance Huis Clos / No Exit – On Translation via Webcams auf einem Screen zusammengeschaltet. Die Regieanweisung von Annie Abrahams weist sie an, nur in ihrer Muttersprache und mit Gesten mit den anderen zu kommunizieren.


Eine gemeinsame Sprache soll entwickelt werden, kommt im Laufe der Performance aber kaum über Einwort Dialoge hinaus, ja das gegenseitige Anschweigen ist vorherrschend und reduziert die Teilnehmer auf ihre Gesichter. Sprachen werden hier als inkompatible Codes vorgeführt und im Scheitern der gemeinsamen Verständigung wird die Fiktion eines universell verbindenden Netzes schmerzhaft entlarvt. Schauen wir in unsere tägliche Computerpraxis, so entdecken wir in unsere Browser History nur Themen unserer Obsessionen - überwiegend in unserer Muttersprache. Unsere Facebook-Freunde bilden einen geschlossenen Kreis, der alle anderen ausschließt. Die Kommunikation scheitert in Huis Clos / No Exit – On Translation und findet damit eine ehrlichere Metapher für das Netz. "Die Hölle, das sind die anderen" heißt es in Jean-Paul Sartres Huis Clos. Annie Abraham aktualisiert das auf: "Die Hölle des Netzes ist Babel, die Hölle des Netzes ist Facebook".

In the performance  Huis Clos / No Exit – On Translation 6 net artists of different nationalities and mother tongues are brought together via webcams on one screen. The stage direction by Annie Abrahams tells them to use only their native language and gestures to communicate with each other.

A common language should be developed but in the course of the performance hardly a word in dialogue is spoken, indeed a not speaking to each other is predominant which reduces the participants presence to their faces. Languages are presented here as incompatible codes and the failure of the common understanding is painfully exposed as the fiction of an universal network system. Looking to our daily computer practice, we discover in our browser history the issues of our obsessions – most in our native language. Our Facebook friends form a closed circle that excludes all others. Communication fails in Huis Clos / No Exit – On Translation and so refers to a more honest metaphor for the Internet. “The Hell, is other people” says it in Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis Clos. Annie Abrahams upgraded this to “The Hell of the Internet is Babylon, the Hell of the Internet is Facebook “
